    Hi,
I saw some where, LA fish guys I think, where he used a 100m filter sock to some of the sand floating in a new setup out of the sump/pumps. Later he switched to a 200m sock for every day use. The sump he was not built for filter sock he just tied one pipe coming in for the tank.

In setting up my new tank I'm planning on using a refugium for filtration. Can or should I use filter sock too?

Something to consider is your plan for livestock...

If you choose to run LPS/SPS corals, then the filter socks will remove the food source for these corals and thus require more effort on your part to maintain them.

If you run fish only, then it is a very good mechanism for removing nutrients from your system (if you keep up on the maintenance).

I plan on putting in corals later. Would there be any harm in running during cycling/setup?

None, though you may experience an extended cycle time as you export nutrients via the filter which would have been utilized in the building of the bacteria population during the first few cycles.

I tried going without one, but I kept getting small pieces of chaeto fouled in my skimmer needle wheel. Plus, I had some trouble with cyano. So once again I'm running a 200 micron sock with the over flow and skimmer effluent going into it, and my water is clean and bubble free.

I hate losing a few pods when I change the sock, so I just try to catch the bigger ones and flick them back into the DT.
