Hi new to this forum, looks great.

I have been reading and the more I read it seems like it is not a good idea to use a filter sock inside the sump. Are they referring to the nylon bags that one uses to put carbon in and if so what is a better way of doing this ? Thanks

A FS is not the same as a media bag(sock). Heres a pic/link of one. Luna

Oh BTW, welcome to 3reef. Some ppl like using FS's and some dont. I dont use a FS, but I do use a filter pad(which is almost the same thing). It does really get your water crystal clear, but its high maint. I have to clean mine out twice a week. Luna

I run a FS on my skimmer output. I use it mostly for bubble reduction, but as Luna said it make the water very clear, but it does come with some maintenance.

I'm with Luna. I use a filter sock and swap it out twice a week. It is placed at the input to the sump. I have three socks and just rotate them. Just don't let one of them sit around in a bucket of water for a week. I forgot about my last one and OMG!!!!!....it smelled like dirty diapers (but just a tad worse). Yup, do the math, I was a bad man and missed my Wednesday changeout. The wash cycle, in fact, just ended a few minutes ago. My basement is finally back to smelling like a basement and not like poopy pants.

Like the idea of using a FS on the output of the skimmer to reduce the bubbles.

You can actually use multiple filter socks. They do come in different sizes. You area not limited to just one. I am going to investigate getting a smaller diameter sock just for that purpose.
