I am in the process of starting a saltwater tank which is 46 gallons. We are looking to go slowly keeping some fish and eventually doing some corals. Just dont where to start with filtration. Reading all these posts can get quite confusing. We want to do it right the first time and any help would be great.

    Thanks

I would suggest live rock, a sump, skimmer and perhaps carbon. That seems to be the general recipe for success, although there are other ways of doing things.

There are a billion ways to do the same thing. Like before, I would certainly recommend you do a sump. This leaves your options a little bit more open and gives you a little bit more water volume. More volume = easier to keep stable. Have you thought of doing a sump? Do you have your tank yet?

Was leaning towards going with a sump and using live rock. Have seen so many designs of sumps dont know where to begin.

There are a lot of pre-fab sumps out there that would do the job. If you are gong to go with a sump, an in sump skimmer would work for ya. That and some live rock and you would be cookin.

please add a refugium with cheto - this will help keep things stable and fix issues easier.

sump/refugium/protien skimmer/live rock/dry rock/ course sand (not fine) carbon reactor

you are off as a great start.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Like said its a 46 gallon that won't be drilled. Any companies make better sumps then others?

I really like my Eshopps R-200 sump/refugium. They have regular sumps, but I would spend the extra few bucks on the refugium models. This is the only brand I have used though, so I can't comment on any others.
