    Starting out with a sump isn't going slow.

    Start off with live rock (1lb per gallon)and a decent hang on back filter. Rinse out the hob(take whole thing off and clean everything pads and all) as often as you can every 2-3 days. As it is only to remove waste and debris in the water column. Your live rock is the actual filter.

    After you feel good about saltwater maybe then consider going the sump/protein skimmer route.

    Skys the limit on this, and doing it DIY, you can make changes easily and way less $$.

    Scale the overall container for your needs, etc.
