I have one goldfish that is 8 1/2 years old. It has fin and tail rot. I went through one course of treatment using API fungus cure. However, her eyes are still covered with something and she is not eating. Can I do another course of treatment. I changed out about 30% of the tank water as instructed by the fungus cure. I don't know what to do? Please help.

Please elaborate on the timeline of when you noticed fish being sick, did treatments, and did water changes as compared to today.

If you *just* did these things, give it some time.

I noticed on Tuesday of this last week(5/26) that my fish was not eating and that its eyes were covered with some kind of film and its fins and tail looked jagged with white around the edges. I called a local pet store. I was told that I needed "Fungus Cure". I bought the medication and treated it on Tuesday evening 5/26 with one packet. I have a 10 gallon tank. The directions said to remove the charcoal filter which I did. I then gave the tank another treatement 48 hours later Thursday 5/28. The directions said to wait another 48 hours and to then put the filter back and change 25% of the water. Last night Saturday 5/30 I changed about 30% of the water and put a new filter in. According to the directions, that is a full course of treatment. My fish's tail and fins look better, but it still has film over its eyes and is still not eating. I usually change the entire water in the tank every 3-6 months or so. I am afraid to change the water completely and I don't know if I should go through another course of treatment. I am concerned since my fish is still not eating. I am not very knowlegeable about all this. I got the fish at a carnival over 8 years ago. I am sure it was just a feeder fish. However, I have now had the fish for a long time and I would like to save it. I am not sure what other information to post that would be helpful to help someone more knowlegable help to diagnose what I need to do next. Thank you.

May be reaching the end of its life cycle--not sure of the lifespan or which breed you have.

Well, I don't know what I have either. I got it at a halloween party for kids. It came in a little baggie. It is a plain goldfish that has of course grown larger over the years. I can accept that it may be the end of its life cycle except for the film over its eyes. There seems to be a continuing problem. Can I treat it again safely for a fungus?

I work part time at Petco (To support this saltwater hobby LOL) I get to play with all the treatments and experiment alot. It really is hit or miss with all these remedies. I cant knock them nor endorse them. Only in MY experience, I would say they work maybe 15% of the time at best. I dont know if it was the treatment, or the fish just kicked it. I know in my saltwater tank, I never ever medicate. I just keep the water prestine, and the diet healthy, and hope for the best. I have yet to lose a fish.(Knock on wood). And I have battled ick several times on and off. I have also had a small case of marine velvet. My fish have always won the battle-------so far. JMO Best of Luck to you and your little buddy!!!;D;D;D

Thank you for your thoughts. I will not give up. I may change out the entire water and see if that helps.

If you do that--dont scrub the tank down and clean the gravel--you will wipe out your bacteria bed--just the water. You should be ok.
