the two wrasses that i am getting are the red velvet fairy wrasse and the McCoskers Flasher wrasse, both are very peaceful wrasses, not sure if there would be enough room in the 30 though, but i think it would be fine.

Also make sure there is a top as all of the wrasses are known to jump

Those are the ones I was looking at too. I don't have a top, so I may not be able to though.

Hmm... Mine was not that aggressive. He would play with my damsel from time to time but nothing too dramatic. I had them kept in a 20gal with no top and for three months I had no problems. The reason why I think they are so popular is because of their incredibly entertaining personality. I loved mine to death, and hated tearing down my 20gal and giving him up. From what I have seen 12 lines have very similar personality types and look a bit different. I hardly ever see them though. I totally understand the not wanting to have stereotypical fish though. I like things that stand out and make even experienced reefers push their noses against the glass. Unfortunately that pleasure usually comes with high price tag... :-/

Here is the link to the 12 line. Not extremely expensive either.

You can make a pretty sweet screen over the aquarium using a plastic screen door framing kit and mesh screening :).

For fish that draw you in closer what about a shrimp goby and pistol shrimp? They are awesome to watch if you like that sort of symbiotic behavior. Although without a top you might have issues, my first Yasha goby jumped, through eggcrate as well.
I wouldn't run a tank without a top personally, too much chance for jumping, especially with wrasses. There are instructions for making a mesh top with the DIY screen frame kits around here on 3reef somewhere.

I think I'll be ok without a top. I don't think fish can figure out how to get out of my tank. It has a wide euro brace on top and nothing seems to realize they have to jump from the middle of the water or they will just hit the bracing. I even had a snowflake eel in it with no top for about a year. I used to watch it try for hours to get out at night.

I'm definitely getting the Mccosker's Flasher. I'm considering possible a six line also, but I'm nervous about introducing conflict.

I forgot about the shrimp goby combo. Are pistol shrimp ok with peppers?

I decided to go with the Mccosker's Flasher and the Six Line. So far so good.
