you should place it as high on the side as possible that it cannot cause a vortex even at its highest setting. what size tank are we talking about?? iv got one on a 55G standard and have it on nutrient export and only need lvl 4 to give flow to the whole tank(with my return ofcourse)

Depends on the size and dimensions of your tank.

Most people put them on one end of the tank directly pointed at the other end. You want it somewhere around mid tank depth, but you can play with it to find your sweet spot.

I have seen a setup that had a pair of them on the back of the tank, next to their overflows. The only issue with this is the current does not spread as well with a single one (unless in a cube of course).

If you stick with a mixed tank, then one is more than enough for you. The flow mellows out after 3 ft, so you can do softies and LPS with ease on the far end without adding another PH.

I run my mp40 on max in a 75g. Shoot for as far up and forward as can be had without creating a vertex on the surface as stated, you want as much unrestricted water movement (live rock and what not) as possible, but more towards the center of the tank, the better the spread. So it really depends on your layout. I run nothing but my MP40 and return and its plenty of flow for the tank, so I think you can safely remove the other powerheads once it is running.

The manual says to put it as high as possible for best results. Make sure you put the solid section of the grill thing facing upwards.
