Way back when I had my 75g I always wanted a flame angel--sold the tank, got out of the hobby for some time. I recently upgraded my 30g to a 65g, and added my last fish...my first (and hopefully last) flame angel.

Now onto my question...I am FOWLR for the time being but will be adding corals in the next few months. Is there anything I can do to help the transition so the flame will be less likely to nip at them? I know they are hit and miss, but I'm hoping that if it's well fed and happy it will leave them alone. Seaweed on a clip should help him with grazing? Advice appreciated--thanks!

the only advice i could say is keep him well fed and maybe shu him away until he gets the point or maybe when first introducing net them off to the side so the angel gets used to seeing them but not touching them maybe?

Congrats on the Flame, they're beautiful fish, loved mine when I had him.

What type of corals are you planning to keep? I envy your self control being able to just put one fish in a 65g, I would want more.

My personal exp with my Flame: when I first got him he was fairly young and was a model citizen. Over the months, he began noticing my corals more, I keep mainly LPS and had a few clams. He was always the first fish to pick at new things when they entered the tank. He began nipping at my Gorgonia mainly and would at times nip at my Maxima clam. He never killed any corals, but he did take a little chunk out of my Maxima's mantle at one point. The tank was always well fed so I don't think you can ultimately stop them if they are going to nip. Never did a seaweed clip, that's a good idea I think.

I guess that's why they are so 50/50, if they seem fine at first, it doesn't necessarily rule out they will get a taste for corals as they get bigger.

@MoJoe--I do have other fish, but wanted the flame to be last (see my sig.) For corals, I want simply stuff--Zoos, mushrooms, GSP. Probably no SPS.

Ooops I read your post wrong on the "first and last" part.

I would say that the Flame would be more likely to pick at things like Brain, Favia, Acan, Clams, Gorgonia, SPS. I never saw mine bother my GSP, Shrooms, Zoas, Torch, Frogspawn. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks--I did think about a brain, they look great, but I will start with the less likely stuff first and go from there.

Gorgeous specimen. He looks to be pretty small. Should be easier to get him to stay away from your corals then when you do add some.
