i think its dieing,....i just bought it and i touched the bottom of it and it feels hard like a rock not like a firm soft coral bottom, but literally like a rock....how can you tell if its dead....i am really angry that the die didnt tell me there would be problems with it.

    put a picture up Killareef

when they are dead or dying the flesh starts to rot

my guess is its just closed down tight and thus feels hard and once it adjusts to its new location will shed its skin and re open

    but a picture will help

Nothing wrong with either of them IMO and IME

there does not seem to be much rock base with either of these 2 corals (may be the photo) they do like to feel secure , so if you only have a small portion of rock then use some glue or reef putty to secure the rock you have to your reef structure , they tend to settle in quicker if secured properly

Both of these species can take and do enjoy a decent amount of water flow, it helps shedding the skin and also keeps things from settling on them

ok i was placing them kinda low cause they were in a 75 gallon tank with only 2x52 watts or something....and i didnt wanna throw them off by putting them too high...i will move them aroung and try to find a good spot with decent flow...thanks! do you have any suggestions on how high to place them i have a 30" tall tank, with 250 watt mh, in a luminarc mini reflector....aalso how long will it take bfore it looks good??

You did right IMO - as your lighting is far superior to what they where under, they will need time to adjust to the lights so keeping them low and making sure they have adequate flow there is a good move

    how long to look good
2 days, 1 week, 10 days - it varies from coral to coral, location to location

let them sit where there are a couple of days and satisfy yourself that there is enough water movement around them and it will be sooner rather than later, if you move them, the process could start again

ok i just now moved them to mid tank area....because the flow in the bottomg i thought wasnt enough to intice(SP?) any kinda shedding or keep things like algae off of them....so we will see how it goes! my leather that i had was in a 55 gallon near the top with pc lights and i put it at the top of my old tank with 250 watts mh....and it got HUGE! so i think mid tank will be ok?

good luck killareef, Im sure it will be fine

I have 2 that came from a LFS tank with 2 x 40 watt T8 tubes over them and put them under 6 x 80 watt T5 - they settled in after 5 days
