I know there must be many 3 reefers out there who have a fireplace in their homes. Question is how many have a tank situated near the fireplace? And if so, how close. For a number of years I had my tank in the same room with the fireplace, but it was actually across the room from it. Now granted I am in Florida so we do not use it much. But that is what I will use for heat.

We just had an addition done with a new gas fireplace and there is a wall that just beckons for my tank to go there. I am concerned it might be to close, like maybe 4-5 feet away from the fireplace box itself. My first instinct was no good, but sure would be nice. Would get a great view of the tank in there. Comments?

    Is it a ventless fireplace?

Otty had a problem with oxygen levels lowering dramatically when he fired up his gas fireplace, so he vented in outside air over his tank that automatically kicks on a fan when his oxygen levels are low, but then again everything he has is pimped out!! I would think if you put in a vent from the outside with a fan in it and only turned it on during the winter you wouldn't have a problem, but a chiller might be necessary and they aren't cheap!!!

yeah, i would first be concerned with the heat, and yes chillers are REALLY expensive.

Thanks everyone!! My main thought was the heat. I had not thought about oxygen levels in the tank. I am going to have to do more investigation on this matter.

Our tank here sets about 12 feet directly across from the Fireplace and I put non-nvented Gas Logs in it 3 yrs ago. Never been a problem and In Fl. you'd so seldom use it not much to worry about even if you are in the Jacksonville area even as the winter weather there is very similar to what we have in Va. And Up here near Hartford Ct. heat is very much needed and lots of it , CO2's won't be much of an issue for y'all .
At the worst the CO2's will suppress the Ph a tad . Mine here ran in the 7.9 range all winter. with no ill effects just keep the DKH up and steady.

Thanks for sending me that link baugherb. And Tangster. you are right, we won't be using it that much, I just didn't want to boil my fish. Oh, and the fireplace is vented out.
