Just captured this guy. Pretty cool waking up in the morning to see him in my trap. Is this a Hermodice carunculata (a bad one) or a regular bristol worm. I hear from some they are great scavengers. I could take him out of my main tank and put him in my refugium. Would that be a good idea and would he be good for that? OR would he be good just to keep in my main tank as a scavenger?

    See pic of him:

They are fine in the refugium (and the tank as long as they are not large) - they are great scavengers and sand shifters, my refugium is full of them. I never see them in my DT -- but I am sure they are there under the rocks doing their thing.

A fire worm has more of a white appearance on the legs (I think its referred to as a bearded fireworm)-- I would toss this one, not a good one to have around - eats corals !. Bristles are ok - just ugly...perfect for a swamp.

If it has white fuzz on the legs I'd flush it ! I can't tell from the pictures.

    Edit - here's a link to check out: http://marinebio.org/species.asp?id=292

doesn't look like the one in the link you showed me. The white fuzzy legs are barley there. If I keep him he will go in my refugium tank.

awesome...I cant thank you enough. Should I try to capture more from my main tank and transfer to the refugium or lean all well alone?

    Your welcome.

Some people can’t stand the sight of them and really want to eradicate them all together. I rarely see them in my display tank – I suspect if I were to see them all the time I would be tempted to hunt them out. I have heard the stories of bristle worms getting 12 inches long and devouring a fish for lunch – never seen it happen, but if I saw one getting that large I would certainly pull it.

Searching and hunting them in your DT is up to you – I don’t see the need.
