I think you are confusing Chromis and Anthias as there is no way to distinguish a male from a female Chromis(except surgery).I have always bought them in odd numbers though.;)Sorry to the O.P. for your loss it does sound to me like they were already sick or you have an unwanted hitchhiker in your tank.

Sorry to hear. Definitely get a refractometer as suggested.

The recommendation on Chromis is odd numbers and lots of them. I kept 7 in my 26 bowfront and they did well.

Aren't they hermaphrodites? The smaller ones are usually the males

There is no way those types of shrimp took down a healthy fish. They were doing their job. You saw a scavenger eating a meal that was already dead. Highly unlikely it was predation.

In your OP you said "salinity is fine too." What exactly is your salinity?

Also, just throwing it out there so you don't go trying to fix something that isn't broken. A PH of 8.0 isn't bad at all. PH is all about stability. You don't need the perfect 8.4 as long as it's stable at 8.0 don't mess with it. You trying to raise it to 8.4 only to fall back to 8.0 will do more damage then just leaving it at 8.0.

I let the bag with the fish sit in the aquarium for about 15 minutes to adjust temp wise and opened the bag and placed it into a clean bucket and did the drip process for about 30 minutes.

If there is possibly an unwanted pest in my water, any suggestions on a way to treat it, just to be safe? 1 person recommended coppersafe. I feel like i should try to find out what caused this or try treating someway before attempting fish again :(

    I appreciate the responses.

Coppersafe may wipe out your shrimp. I'm not sure you'll have to do more research about it, but I wouldn't treat my tank for anything unless I was sure about what I was trying to prevent.

:( My salinity is 1.024. I just checked again now.

I am just not sure where to go from here now. Or what to even try searching for. I've tried but since it is kind of a blind search, I am really not sure.
