I got my first skimmer today from the LFS, i have been lookin around for a long time. I have been researching for a skimmer that fits my hood ( its a plastic piece of junk ) and i decided on the AquaC Remora w/Maxi 1200. It is running in my 55g FOWLR.

Had to take the ol rotozip to the hood to cutout a section for the skimmer to hang over, but overall i am satisfied with how it came out.

Camera phone, sorry the pictures suck!

i know there is a "break in period" but it is not really making any foam below the collection cup. Is this normal since i just set it up?

Update: The pump was too close to the wall of the skimmer box and causing it to not perform to its best. I moved it over a little and i now have foam!! working on getting a good level set for the skimmer box.

Also i am considering adding a drain to the box myself. Anyone else out there done this to thiers, if so did you have any problems with where you put the drain hole.

Adding a drain hole will be great. Lessons the amount of time you would have to shut off the skimmer to drain it, just make sure you have a large collect container. I would drill the underside of the collection cup, that way it will drain completly

I belive it takes about 48-72 hours for the skimmer to produce some good foam. Thats about how long it took mine as well.

    Update:

Skimmer is producing a nice skimmate now, the first few were pretty much brown water and now i have adjusted the cup to a good height and im noticing the water up top is getting darker and darker. But this brings up another question i have...

Do you have to unplug the skimmer when you dump the collection cup?

    I dont think so LrgTime
I have a Deltec MCE my self, but they are similar in design I believe
and on mine you just lift the box out and throw away gunk and clean out
I also use a paper towel to wipe around the top of the skimmer and get rid of any gunk thats there as a build up of waste can interfere with future foam production
