In my experience psammacoras are the fastest growing montis. You can frag them and they are encrusting in days. I also agree with the birdsnest as a first though. I would go with one of those as it seems like one you like. The only thing I would stear clear of for a first is acroporas.

i have a reefstar 250 hqi mh 14k over 29 gallon. the corals that are in there are gsp, xenia, candycanes, toadstool, hairy shrooms,zoas/palys and small frags of kenya and colt
would these pose a threat to sps as far as chemical warfare?

I will say this as a general rule of thumb. If your xenia does very well, most sps won't. The reason is simply nutrients. The xenia will thrive in nutrient rich water as your sps usually don't do so well. You may be able to keep them alive but they will most certainly brown out. Also, I do think that with all of the softies in the tank, you could have an issue with chemical warfare as well as shading. The kenya and leathers get pretty tall and do a great job of shading your sps. These are just a few things to look at.

    Good point and excellent observation....

zoas, gsp, candycanes, I wouldnt worry too much on chemical warfare. But for the rest I would be cautious... Especially colt and xenia... They grow fast and will invade causing that chemical warfare.

They are very fast growers, but they aren't montiporas either.

I agree with a green slimer, any montipora species and birdsnest are fairly hardy and easier to keep. However, I have a 6x54w tek fixture and bleached my green birdsnest, so watch out, it requires lower light levels as do montipora in general compared to other sps species.
