Of course there may be some corals that can overgrow and take over another coral. I know that many people do mixed hard and soft corals and more often than not, if spaced correctly, everything goes fine.

I STRONGLY recommend reading the following article published by a knowledgable marine scientist. Starting the second/third paragraph down, he starts talking about the competitiveness in space of corals and how soft corals and hard coral interact.

This is a very very good article. I read the whole thing before recommending it to you and I think you would learn a lot from it as did I.

    Cheers,
    Yuri

Chuck is very knowledgeable and most of his articles are very good. I wish he would copy and paste them to be black letters on a white background though. Yikes.

If you want to mix hard and soft corals in a small volume of water, it is best to do more frequent water changes and change carbon more often to remove the alleopathic compounds (i.e. toxins/chemical warfare).

Please keep in mind that Chuck only gave a few examples of corals that exude a lot of toxins. Green Star Polyps (Clavularia or Pachyclavularia) are quite noxious to a number of species, Toadstools (Sarcophyton) are too, yada, yada, yada.
