Hi all, in response to my other thread about creating a fish database I've decided to attempt one that will allow you to do a couple different things:

    1) Allow you to search on specific fish criteria: Common Name, Family, Temperament, Minimum Tank Size, Reef Compatibility, Diet, ect (see attachment for current complete list)

    2) Eventually be able to input your current tank stats: DT Tank size, Current fish, Recommended Min Tank Status (i.e. New, established, well-established), Reef/FOWLR, ect. And it will (hopefully) output a list of suitable fish, fish to add with caution, or tell you that you have too many fish already (or at least give a warning to that affect). -- This, I think, is doable with enough information in the database. I will include a compatability chart within the database to compatability and maybe add a feature that takes into account very large tanks that will allow more than one of similar types if the tank is 'big' enough (but this will come last).

Anyways, if you would like to help with this I've attached a small spreadsheet that has a sample fish information inputted. If you can possibly add information about fish that you know of. If I get enough help with the initial information population I can work to get all of the programming done in the background to handle the 'intelligence' of the system.

I figure you guys would be a good go-to source for information. I'll do my best to compile all of the information and take into account the different views of the members. I've got a macro that will automatically add the information from the excel sheet to the database :)

Thanks for any help you can give. If you do decide to input some information please send the completed spreadsheet to my gmail address: silverj87 at gmail.com. Thanks!

Note: Options for some of the fields are above the cells, should be easy to follow from the sample given.

Thanks for any and all help and suggestions. Should be interesting to see how this turns out... I've got a good programming background but the intelligence of the database will depend a lot on the amount of information I get.

    Enjoy!
