I Had a clown in my tank and he got sick. He had a slimy white coat on him do to my nitrite being high. I pulled him out of the tank and treated him in a separate tank. Did a water change in my tank to adjust my levels. After about 3 days he was doing better and I put him back in my tank. He had then recovered and was doing well. I went and bought a blue hippo tang and in a matter of 2 days of this fish being in my tank he also got a white film coat on his body and ended up dying. My water is perfect. Nitrite 0 / nitrate 0 / PH 8.2 / salt level .25 / temp 78. My concern is why this happened. I am willing to go by another fish but concerned that this will happen again? What am I doing wrong? I then thought that maybe the sickness of my other fish may have stayed in my tank and that I should let my tank filter cycle for a few days before adding another fish to make sure the sickness is out of the tank but not sure if this is the problem. Thanks For reading hope someone can drop a little knowledge on me

I'm not very good with fish and don't know that much about them, but from what I know your right about it being in your tank still. I think it's ick and I hear it can be in your water all the time, I've never dealt with it, so I don't know why it comes out some times and not others. I'm sure some one on here will fill us in.

How old is the tank? How big is the tank? What is your filtration?

You say ".25" for a salt level, I assume you mean 1.025?

Either way, you should let your tank go fallow "fishless" for at least another month to let whatever was in there starve and die off.

Next, you should not add fish within days of each other. I would say to wait at least a month if not more inbetween adds of fish. Especially with tangs as they are poop machines and ich magnets!!!

    Hope this helps!

Hello and Welcome to 3reef, wish it was under better cirucmstances.

Marine Ich is the most frustrating of marine fish diseases. To effectively treat it you have to understand it's complicated live cycle. This link my help.

As M-Ocean Man adviced leaving the tank without fish if possible for 60 days is a good and easy way to combat it.

If you raise the S.G. i should help speed in the eradication of the ich, if im not correct? BUt still do this without any livestock.

That's a bit small of a tank for a hippo tang of any size IMO.

I would advise leaving the tank fallow for a while and reintroduce fish slowly, and research research research!!!!

I am aware that the tank size was a little small for the hippo but this fish was a juvanile and was only a 1 incher. I also had a friend with a very large tank and once he was to outgro mine I was ganna transfer him to a 200 gallon

Ich is just one possibility, I have a feeling it's more something to do with water parameters. You said you had high nitrite before then did a water change. In that situation doing a water change will only solve the problem temporarily. To me it sounds like the end of a cycle that was never properly completed, but it could be disease too. There marine velvet, clownfish disease etc.
