It all started last night with my flame angel, it wasnt looking so good then it stopped swimming and died after about 15 minutes. This morning I woke up to my 2 green chromis breathing rapidly which they still are, my mandarin goby looks like he might be struggling to but i cant really tell. I decided to move my ocellaris(which showed no signs of any problems) to my QT tank and thats when it happened...as soon as i released him into it he swam for a minute then sank to the bottom and only swims for a few seconds every so often. What happened? My tank is 4+ months old and salinity and ph are perfect, other than that i dont have tests for.

I checked for signs of ick...but nothing. I just added a new maxi-jet 1200 powerhead to my system. Thats the only recent changes.

Well, we do need to know parameters. At the very least, you need tests for NH4, NO2, NO3 and pH.

I would suggest getting at least a basic API combo test kit for about $40. Salifert is best for NH4, NO2 and pH and Elos for NO3 IMHO, but you will spend more money for those. So I would go out and procure that (or get the LFS to test your water) and then fill out the form at the beginning of the ASAP section.

    We can go from there.

As pharmrjohn said, you need to test for at least ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and ph. It is extremely hard to diagnose a problem without your water chemistry.

A small water change might buy you a little bit of time to figure out what is going on. I just had the same problem as you and didnt have the tests I needed. Went out and got them and descovered my water was much worse than I thought. Didnt take much to get it back in control and save the rest of my fish but without knowing what the problem is theres no way to fix it.

While your waiting for your test kits you could also take a water sample to your LFS and have them test your params for you...

How recent was the powerhead added? Were you doing anything in the room? Did you clean the glass with windex?

do you have a ground probe in your tank....stray voltage?*

For your mandarain, in the qt tank you are going to have to dump daily pods in there for him

You really need ot have water testing kits before you ever put a fish in the tank.....you must have the ability to test your own water

Are you sure the QT tank is cycled? Did you drip the fish before you put it in there or did you just place them in there? SG the same?

The other suggestion I can make is get some Prime or Alpha and dose that immediately into the tank...both the QT and the other tank. Prime and Alpha will neutralize ammonia and nitrates in your water so that your fish can tolerate them. IMO....that is the other necessaty for anybody owning a tank...must have Prime or similar product on hand at all times for emergencies.

    Good luck
