    Hi everyone!
Just wanted some opinions...I have seen it done by many reef hobbyists but want true opinions

    Can a yellow tang
(or any bright fish :p) live in a 55 gallon reef tank?

please all opinions and suggestions for other fish instead of a yellow tang :)

    Thanks!!

Yes it can live in a 55 gallon. My experience before I knew better is that Yellow Tangs after as they get bigger go a little nuts in smaller tanks, they begin to swim in repetitive patterns, they become aggressive. They may appear healthy and some will tell you happy. No one can judge a fishes happiness, it's ridiculous to even say you can, but people will tell you that all the time.
Common sense tells me that a fish that spends it's life swimming long distances forging over reefs in the wild is probably a poor candidate for smaller tank.
As I posted already, yes I tried to keep one in a smaller tank many years ago, before the times of forums, and before I researched yellow tangs and witnessed them in the wild. Both times I re-homed the fish to larger tanks.
Yellow Tangs in a 55 gallon is a bad choice.

    Yellow tang

I love the yellow tang. It's a amazing fish. Free range and colorful, but needs a large area to scavage. Can't live in a super clean tank, must have algae to groom, that is already established or it will quickly wipe out the algae. You can get very small ones to enjoy in a 55 knowing in a year you must rehome the tang to a larger robust system. If that suits your liking then I say yes. It will control blooms and provide color and when it's gone you can add a few more crabs to take up the grooming. Just be sure your lfs will get him a bigger home. Most will happily. Who knows they may trade the crabs for the fish.

Make sure to tell the dealer you want a tang less the 3/4 inch IMO. But what's that matter lol.

    Diver Tom.

Don't get a tang, finding a home doesn't always work, I'd recommend a midas blenny, canary blenny (Bred by ORA), yellow cleaner gobies (Bred by ORA too), Yellow assessors, YWG, and candy hogfish, oh and RGs

if yellow is what your after a midas blenny is much better suited fi a tank that size, I have a 75 gallon tank and think its to small for a yellow tang, I did get a onespot foxface for my tank but he is the biggest fish on the tank and has a lot of free swimming room
