I thought about getting a cleaner shimp. The wrasse sounds like it might be a better idea. I just don't want to kill anything else if I can help it .
Did getting the wrasse really help?
I'm just so new at this.
Getting on this forum and being able to talk or read about people that has been dealing with these problems before is really been a "Blessing"[I hate killing things].
My temp, is 78 and salinity is .024 I have some corals in my tank will lowering the salinity to .018-.019 do anything to them ? Also by turning up the temp to 82-85 do anything to them?

Hey Reeferkeeper, you want a great fish for that? Try a Neon goby. Google Neon goby and read up on it. I have one and he cleans every single fish in the my tank. Its great to watch, the fish come real close to it, they flare thier fins, as to let him know its safe to clean me and he starts to "walk" all over them picking at things. Its like having the Discovery channel live at home. You wont regret it. Luna

Just to let you know from experience. There are two LFS near me. Neither keep copper in their tanks. Fish store A won't sell a fish the day they get it in, keep their fish only system at a lower salinity, quarantine if the fish shows signs of illness, and will not sell a fish that they even suspect of being diseased. Fish store B will sell a fish while it's still in its shipping bag, keeps the water at normal salinity, doesn't ever quarantine a fish, and will sell it to newbies with the ich on it. Also do to improper treating they now have an extremely resistant form of ich that is freakishly hard to treat.

Point being you tend to tempt fate at a LFS unless you know about them both well. Try to learn more about yours and if there is a second near you talk to their customers and see if they have shopped there for a while and if they've had any bad experiences.

Other than that I can tell you from personal experience that a cleaner shrimp will help keep ick outbreaks down, but that goby sounds pretty cool too. Maybe get both?;)

I know what your saying. There are two near me also, the sad thing is the one I've been dealing with is the better of the two !! The other one had a few fish that looked ok, but when I started to look at some of the other tanks I saw fish with no fins at all just doing circles ! That was the last time I went there!!!
I have never tried to order anything off line and was going to ask this at some point.I just thought if I couldn't see it before I bought it than it was a chance it might have something . But even seeing the fish I got and thought that they looked good ,they still had something , that by me stressing them out showed up . Does anyone know some good places to order from . not to many places up here were I'm at . I know of anoyher place but lt's like 125 miles away along drive to take when I only get Sun. off from work.

I like the Idea of Ich being delt with by critters instead of all this treatment stuff!!! even if it just keeps it down.

My suggestion of lowering the salinity and hiking the temp. worked for me (fish only tank). I bought the cleaner wrasse because my cleaner shrimp went on strike...after he shed, he is in deep hiding, I guess for fear of being hurt with a soft shell. So that is why it was suggested to me to buy the wrasse.

I was also suggested to buy a Neon Goby..which I have been told that fish actually open their mouths to let them in...and then they filter through the gills. Too cool !!, but the store owner said the cleaner wrasse was a better bang for the buck...who knows..!

I am a newbie..and so far this forum has helped me with questions and concerns that I have had. Great to be a part of !!
