Okay here is the next question...I have a Fluval 404 with my tank set up. My tank is not drilled so I am going to have to use the canister. My question is this...which medias should I use in it and how often should I clean it? With my fish only system I usually change it about once a month. Thanks for the info!!

Did you want to run a sump? Is that why you're mentioning that the tank isn't drilled? If you want to run a sump or a wet/dry filter, you can easily do it by adding an external overflow. No drilling needed :)

If that's not the way you want to go, you can run the Fluval with the same stuff that you used in your fish only...assuming you used some kind of carbon. The only difference is that with a reef tank, you will have to break down and clean the filter more often than you would with a fish only.

I am open to suggestions....Can you maybe send me a link on a extrenal overflow? I just want to get the best stuff that I can that will make my reef thrive. If the fluval will work then I will throw some carbon in there. I did hear that you have to take the biological stuff out of it when your LR is ready to go. Hmmm...decisions...decisions....Thanks again!!

    Jeremy,

I use the same cannister filter.

Mine just has the foam filter pads, 4 bags of Chemi pure and sometimes some phosphate and/or Nitrate remover.

I clean mine every week :)

I have the External CPR overflow box, they are very nice and very quiet.

I have also used the AMiracle brand, which has a "U" shaped tube, works great also. My new CPR one is much quieter.
