I'm interested in knowing if it's a fish store as in an aquarium fish store (LFS), or a fish store as in some open market fresh caught cod and tilapia along with free octopus cooking fish store. :D If it smells like an LFS, I like that smell.

And live rock smells TERRIBLE while curing. That's when all the dead stuff rots off and the bacteria colonies get to work on it. The rotting process without established biofiltration smells like...well...rotting fish. Maybe this is what happened? Running carbon will get rid of it quick, but it will also simply go away when the tank gets established.

I love the smell of my LFS. It doesn't smell fishy but it is very humid and ocean smelling. If I smell my tank it smells the same way. My wife makes fun of me for smelling my tank all of the time.

When I can smell mine, I replace the carbon. I hate the smell of the ocean. yuk.

But I do love looking at my ocean box!

If I stop using carbon it takes about a week for it to start "the smell".

Set up a reactor for the carbon it will do a much better job at oder removal and requires less carbon and lees need to change it as often . I have all my stuff in the basement and I was not able to get to the sump area for a yr or more what I did was I found a old canister set up for a 2 stage R/O put in carbon in each cylinder and its been running for 5 months now and oder free I hate that fish oil smell thats what it is the oils from the slime coat and the waste food that creats that smell .

Took my 125 about 3 days to get rid of smell....running carbon in canister filter and a bag in the sump under the DT return.
