Could be, it is usually considered a sign that they are sick with something most likely internal.

Bummer they do seem to show distress quickly. Are they eating well? I would add garlic to their food to help them along. Otherwise I am not too sure for diagnosing what truly is ailing them. Are they nice and fat?

I could be they have pigged out on the algae and are showing the results. My tang has shown stringy bits once when I changed how I was feeding the tank and it was able to get more food. What species of tang do you have? Regal (Pacific Blue) tangs prefer to eat meaty food over vegetable matter but they will definitely eat it.

The yellow is going to need more vegetable matter in its diet than the regal. The regal will eat the vegetable matter if it feels it needs more food.

My regel tang eats NLS Thera-A pellets with garlic which is higher in protein. I bought it as a small 3/4 or so inch juvie and it has prob doubled in size over the past 2 months. I also throw in some green garlic infused nori about twice a week and she devours it as well. She also picks around the rocks and whenever I add phytofeast she goes crazy looking for food!

She does poop a lot after eating the algae, think of it as you eating lots of salad, good for you but keeps you regular;D
