I have a Coralife Superskimmer 65 that I have about had it with! I am running it on a 75gal with a 20+gal sump. I am constantly dialing it in......i mean like 5 times a day. I loose water from evap so fast that I have to continuously adjust the water height in it.

First off let me start by saying that I know that this is not a big enough skimmer for my current set up! I purchased this years ago when I was running the tank with a canister and no sump. It worked great at the time as i used it as a HOB system. It required a few minor adjustments to compensate for the water loss, but it was managable then. With the sump set up I am now loosing at least a gal of water a day and its just not cutting it! I didnt buy a new unit when I started the tank back up because it did work and there were obviously MANY other expenses that I had in getting the tank back up and running. I have been looking at buying another one, but truthfully I'd like to keep using this one for a while. All of my perams are great with it running. I'm just sick of constantly messing with it.

My first question is.......Is there any good way to combat the level issue? I dont currently have an ATO and dont know that I will go that route. It kind of scares me after reading tons of horror stories about overflows!

It is currently in the 3rd chamber of my Aqueon Pro-Flex sump. I try to keep the water in that chamber to a level of 3-4". I dont think I can put it in the second chamber because the water is at such a high level. Even at its lowest setting I think the skimmer will overflow the catch cup very quickly. The second chamber is currently set up as a refugium, but I have yet to put any LR of macro in it. I'm debating on whether or not I will do this anyway. I have also tossed around the idea of setting it up as a berlin system, but then I will just have 2 chambers that the water level is not constant in.

My second question is.....Are their GOOD skimmers out there that are not effected by the water level in the sump. I usually mess with somthing on my tank on a daily basis, but I'm sick of monitoring the skimmer so closely. If there are any skimmers out there like this what are they.

I want whats best for my fish and tank, but I really dont want to spend a lot of money. Ive even thought of placing the skimmer back on the back of the tank just so I dont have to mess with it, but i just dont like the look of it. One of the reasons I went with a sump was to clean up the DT. Ive been doing a lot of reading on the Tunze DOC 9410 and it seems like a pretty cool skimmer, but its about double what I'm willing to pay at this point. I dont have a heavy bio load and just dont see the need for such a high power skimmer at this point!

Does anyone have any experience with DIY skimmers? Do they work as well?

Any and all input would be helpful!

For now, find out the optimal water level in the chamber from the manufacturer, others, etc.

Then put it in the constant level chamber of your sump. Build a shelf if you have to raise it, etc.

Make sure the air hose inlet isn't slowly getting clogged with salt, etc. - Don't ask me how I know.

I don't think there is a skimmer out there that is not affected by water height to some extent. That being said, I replaced my Coralife 65 with an Eshopps PSK-100H. Much, much happier with it. Very simple to adjust (and you don't have to reach inside your tank to adjust the pump, which is very nice). Pulls out a lot more skimmate (subjective, I know but the results were very easy to see). I think it is a little more quiet as well.
