I've been wondering about this as I am just about to get started. This post has just made up my mind. Worth the extra time and cash apparently.

Yup...I ran a dedicated wire from my sub panel, 20 amp single pull, to a dedicated outlet of two duplex 15 amp GFI...then each of those goes to a Belkin surge protector..one for pumps...one for power heads...one for lights... and one for heater, ground probe, fuge light....That breaker has no other responsibility then the tank..as I previously have posted, when dealing with water and electric, redundancy is your friend. : )
Glad all these stories, while spook-ee and learned...no one was injured. good stuff.

Does Apex make a water sensor? Could you have that shut everything down and notify you?

MIne wires/power strips are not pretty, and I was running a GFCI adapter for my display tanks power.

MOnths ago I hung the power strips in the back of my stand to get them off the floor/carpet. MOst if not all have a loop lower that the strip that powers it.

I got new PC lights a few weeks ago, and the brand new lights keep tripping my GFCI, the old one never did. So, I nixed the GFCI- for now at least. At least if I can a surge or power out, the power comes back on w/o having to reset my GFCI.

I feel my family and I are safe in the case of a flooded foor for several reasons. Mainly b/c the power strips/wires are off the floor. In a flood, it would quickly make it's way thru the carpet and wood seams to my basement. Under it is a suspended ceioling of those pressed insulation tiles for the ceiling in my basement playroom.

If the OP reads this, I am glad any harm or tradgedy was aborted. I know you feel as I that our hobby doesn't have to burn your house down or kill you, maybe lighten the wallet however.

So scary! I'm so glad your parents were there.

Before I knew better we also had our power strips near the sump and the sump overflowed and there was a fire. Thank goodness we were downstairs to put it out, because it was late at night and we should have been in bed!

    Great upgrade!!
