what would cause such a HORIFFIC shark attack like the one that just happened. i understand a lone shark swimming in the surf mistakingly biting a swimmer due to poor visibility from kicked up sand, bubbles etc. but this was clear water out of the surf zone and had many sharks attacking the man. do you guys think things in the ocean are changing maybe due to global climate change. maybe food sources are changing and the sharks are becoming more agressive. i love swimming in the ocean but this attack was not the typical mistaken identity with a nip from a shark..the shark realizes its mistake and swims away. i hope this doesnt become more and more common.

it happens...every year about 50 people or so, you just don't hear about it as much. put a few hundred thousand people in the water it is bound to happen sometimes...There are so many sharks in the water around here, 50 is nothing...it is shocking it isn't more. I think it is a testament to how well behaved most sharks are. It happened just offshore of where I am sitting right now, I know the area it has always had lots of sharks.

Couldn't agree more. Two years ago, we had a fool that decided to go swimming in the middle of a fish boil with sea lions already there. Most of us that spend a lot of time in the ocean know that pineys are never a welcomed site when you're surfing/swimming because they're the bait.Just jumped right off of her boat to do it. She ended up in two pieces thanks to her brilliant decision. It's their home, their rules.

O and just fyi sharks are not attracked to human blood because human blood is iron based and fish blood the shark food source is copper based

They've showed pictures in the news of the sharks swimming all around the people swimming.I couldnt believe how many there were and how big some were.Very scary to me.I swam into a small one with my snorkel mask right into his nose.I think it scared him as bad as it scared me.

Hence why I don't swim in the ocean.

Bah, you don't swim in it cause you'd need a 5/4/3 mil wetsuit just to stay alive for a few minutes up there :D

Seriously tho, I surf about every single day and have had my close run-ins but my head has kept me out of it (sea lion bitten in half right in front of me). There have been a few days where I paddled out and got the weirdest feeling that something bad would happen if I stayed out longer. It's at that point that I turn around and head back in. I've read too many shark attack accounts from surfers that said they had the same funny feeling but decided to stay out.

If you are talking about the lady that died in Avila Beach swimming, that was actually back in August of 2003 not 2 years ago. I remember because I was living in Idaho at the time and a co-worker asked me about it. Other than that I dont remember anyone else being attacked, was there another one?

Yep, this wasn't the one that was the teacher at Allan Hancock. This was a hippie sailing her boat through on her way from Santa Cruz to San Diego. The teacher never got fully bit in half.
