i'm just wondering what everyone feels would be the best pellet or maybe even flake food would be?

when i had my cichlids i would feed them Spectrum "color-enhancing" pellets and my fish were always so brightly colored(as the label claimed) that my friends, who were not fish people, would see them and have a hard time believing that they were not saltwater, only fresh.

also, along with pellet food everyday, they'd get good veg in their diet from these veg sheets i'd put in a couple times a week(i forget what they were called) and also live food about once/week too. i'm sure that helped.

but are their any good "color-enhancing" pellets that i should feed daily to my fish once the tank is cycled?

also, how often should i feed live food?
i'm planning on having a couple clowns and some other peaceful fish...

I switched from frozen foods to Ocean Nutrition flakes about 3 years ago and my fish love it (so do I-- it's a lot less messy. lol). Never fed live. I mix Formula One and Prime Reef. Here's a link to their website. You can check out all their offerings, there. Most foods/blends are available in flake, pellet, or frozen.

I also use New Life Spectrum pellets. Also, Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef Flakes, Formula 2 Flakes, Spirulina Algae, and Julian Sprung Sea Veggies. I will usually feed one of these per day. But I also feed frozen every night as well, plus nori for my Tangs & Foxface.

so basically a variety, like one different kind everyday, and then some frozen stuff at night?

is the "rule of thumb" about the same for SW as it is for FW, meaning feed as much as they can eat in about 5 mins?

Since different fish can have very different dietary requirements, offering a variety for each meal is best IMHO.

I feed what mine can eat in about 2 minutes, once per day, and they all stay fat and healthy.

I love the new life spectrum pellets. I've tried the formula one and the fish don't seem to like it as well.

I do not use garlic, and I avoid any fish food that has it. Garlic is not "natural" to fish, and has never been proven to be "anti-" anything. It does stimulate a feeding response, but even the notion that it boosts a fish's immune system is pure speculation. OTOH, it has been proven to cause fatty liver disease in large doses...

I used to feed nothing except spectrum. Mainly because they produced a small fish pellet. Many of my anthias and wrasse species did much better with a smaller sized pellet so they can compete with the larger fish. I switched to Reef Nutrition's AP Breed and could not be happier. Because I always use an auto feeder it is important to me that the food sinks. They offer the widest selection of pellet size that no other company can cmopete. Because Reef Nutrition is a big player in the fish farm food industry, I have always trusted their products.
