I bought thehperfect color flame angel from hawaii. I had him for over a month with no issues at all. Tank is perfect and all other fish ate well. I leave in the morning after feeding and I come home and he's dead? I don't get it. I supplemented his food with angelixir sponge blend and he always ate like a pig. I have a large hermit that has grown a lot in this past year, could he be the culprit? I'm trying to make sense of this.

Sorry for your loss. Flame angels are gorgeous fish and has been on the list of fish I want, but can't have for a long time.

Unfortunately, sometimes fish just die. I had a Bangaii cardinal that was the same way- never figured out what the issue was. Sometimes its not the fault of the owner and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it, especially since it sounds like you took very good care of it.

Any signs of disease at all? Any recent pictures? Did you notice anything at all different from when you got him until now? Did you notice anything at all postmortem (or did you find him too late)? Was this in the 36? If so, what are the other tankmates?

Sorry for all of the questions, just trying to see if there is anything at all we can help you figure out. I have only lost one fish with no explanation, and it just so happens it was a Flame Angel. But I only had it for less than a week; not a month.

I had a flame when i was a bigger noob than i am now, he died on me as well while i was at the army. At the time a skunk died on me and i thought it was due to poor water quality. Now in retrospect i actually think it was due to a poor diet (use to only feed flakes, now make my own fish food)

When i upgraded i really wanted another dwarf and decided to go for a coral beauty instead of a flame. Hardier and with time i have come to appreciate his colors more, even if he is a little shy.

    What do you feed?

i wouldn't blame the hermit. In my opinion, a fish would already have to be very sick and weak for a hermit to get it. I know flames are more susceptible to elevated levels of copper but I'm guessing this is a reef tank and you haven't added copper.

Thanks for the replies. Its the 36 bowfront and his tankmates are a mandarin goby, 2 purple firefish and a yellow watchman. No signs of disease at all. No ich, no nothing. Always fed him foods soaked in angelixir and selcon and he ate very well. He was perfect when I left, even took food from my hand. I've never dosed copper.

I've been told that flame angels from Hawaii don't do as well, or live as long as flames from other areas in the indo-pacific. Don't know if this is true, but one LFS along with others they new from other stores around the country couldn't keep them alive. And when they contacted their supplier, they were told, the supplier was having troubles too.

I'll have to look into that. The color from hawaii was amazing though. Maybe down the road I'll try again. I've had my coral beauty for almost 2 years and my potters for almost 4 months so who knows. All in different takes ofcourse ;)

I have heard from locals here too that they just die all of a sudden. One of my buddies has gone through 2, and one went through 4-5. My LFS just got some FAT ones in and I was thinking it might be time for my first angel......

Sorry for your loss, sometimes feces occurs. ;-)

My flame is still battling with my rust and occas. my C. beauty.

He's still eating, very active, but boy, is he beat up lately.

It'll be months before my 180 is up and running
