I hear ya Adam, they certainly can be difficult fish. I felt like I had a hit here though since he's been doing great for 18 months. Couldn't have asked for a more behaved flame angel. :-/

Well I'll be finding out the situation in the next hour...

He's still alive and still doing his rapid breathing. I'm going to take a video of it and post it here.

Sometimes if ich or marine velvet hits the gills first all you notice is rapid breathing.

Ich or Marine velvet may be possible? I don't see any signs of that and I haven't had any new fish added for over 9 months. I'm not very good at detecting marine velvet though.

Here's a video of the behavior, so maybe that will help (sorry about the quality, it's from my phone):

Sorry, apparently the video was private. It should be public now.

I have good news! He's not breathing heavy this morning! I could only see him a few brief times in the dark but from what I see he's not breathing rapidly!

If this continues, then I think he just had food stuck in his mouth. Phew, if that's the case. Still going to go forward with the water change, but this is great news.

I would consider this mystery solved! Thanks everyone!

3 days later and he's looking great!

FYI to everyone: Formula 2 Pellet food is contains particularly larger pellets where the fish may get it stuck in their mouth.

I believe this is what happened to my flame. It broke down enough eventually, but certainly caused a scare. Ironically the pellet food has a flame angel on the label lol.
