i recently went to my local fish store (story of my life hahaha) and there i saw flame scallops and a great deal too. i wanted to pick one up but was short on the funds, considering there is a krispy kreme doughnuts right down road and i was very hungry. a dozen doughnuts later i saw the little beauties. i went home and did some research only to find from most sources that they die relatively fast in captivity. mostly by starvation. i would really like one or more for my 80 gallon and i have many different foods that i am already feeding my corals in the tank so i believe it would have enough nutrition and food.

has anyone had luck keeping these? i would love to have one but would also like some back up.

You are right they dont last very long, my suggestion is save your money bc they probably wont last longer then a couple months. I think they are one thing that belongs in the ocean and thats about it.

saw one at my LFS for $18.99 yesterday and it sparked me to do some research on them as well. I came to the same conclusion as you....i need some first hand expirience from the experts.

I don't know anyone that has kept these alive, even in a full blown reef tank that houses tridacna clams.

SE wi, huh? what store was this?

On a side note, a box of Krispy Cremes will stay with you longer than the flame scallop. LOL

haha that was what i was thinking. gotta have those krispy kremes. i went to aquatics unlimited. they were going for eight dollars there. very suprising. their prices tend to be on the high end. i live just a couple minutes from there so i am there atleast two times a week. lol

I had attempted to keep some in the past. They did not fair well in my smaller tank.

About 2 or 3 months ago I decided to try again. I placed it in my 135g tank and it is actually doing well. HOWEVER, I dose live phyto and do coral freenzy, artic pods, etc. And when/if this goes I will not buy another. I just kind of figured it had a better chance in my tank then in the empty store tank

If you do get them, keep us posted on how they fare. I was interested in flame scallops a while ago at my LFS, but had always been told they won't last in captivity. If you put in the effort and research and find a way to do it, I'd be interested in hearing how.

I would recommend only getting one. They will move also and sometimes get behind rocks. Then you have to re-rockscape to get it to feed it. I will say mine has not moved once!

Yeah, they move around and may move to a spot where you can't even see it. Mine lasted about 6 months. Seemed health but one day all that was there was the shell. Cleaner crew wiped it clean.
