I have always considered adding a float switch to shut off the return pump, in the event that a snail or something ever blocked my overflow. This morning, I found a big turbo snail stuck in the overflow tube, so it got me thinking about this again. Anyway, I've looked but all of the float switches are on/off when the switch is activated, but switch back when the float switch is deactivated.

For this application, I'd rather one that once tripped stays off until manually reset. That way I can remove the obstruction, or fix the problem without it cycling on off and potentially damaging the pump.

Does anyone make such a switch?

You need to wire the float switch via what is called a latching relay so it stays off until you reset it.

Thanks AZ, I'll look into that. I looked around a bit and all I could find was a controller, or a tunze water level alarm. Both are kind of pricey, so I guess I may need to go diy on this..

You can run the float upside down.

That does not solve the problem, it still comes back on when the level drops, he wants it to latch out until reset manually. That requires a relay or open contact to do so. Latching relays are mentioned often on the various forums so a search should turn up directions on what you need and how to go about wiring it.

Yeah unfortunately... Seems like someone would sell something like this already made. Apparently not many people worry about a clogged overflow. probably a good thing I guess.

    Thanks all.

Cool, I'll have to remember that for my next build. Would probably be tough to retro fit my current setup unfortunately....
