I was doing a water change and pouring the water in a tote with a drain hole, and i forgot to plug the drain hole. So I pretty much poured 20gallons on my carpet Which is on top of brand new hardwood floor..

I dried the floor but the carpet is still soggy and my room smells like fish...

How should I dry the carpet and remove the smell?

Get a wet dry vac and suck the water out of the carpet with that. Then open up the place and run a strong fan to vent. Place the carpet in a vented place that you can let it dry without bothering anyone.

You can rent one of those rug-doctors carpet cleaners and it will suck the water up pretty good. Also, you can use one of those big wet-dry shop vacs and remove the filter from inside and you're ready to suck water away.
As a 3rd measure, if you can get your hands on a de-humidifier it will suck up any remaining moisture from the carpet and foam underneath.
If the hardwood floors were finished, meaning it was topcoated and not just sanded and left alone, the boards won't suck any water on the top, but will on the side where the seems are. If that's the case, don't worry since that water mark won't show if you ever take the carpet out and re-finish the floors.

Been there, we rented a professional steam cleaning service to come out and steam clean the room. I like the rug doctor idea since you can do it yourself and make sure its all up.

I would stay away from ironing the carpet. Most carpets today are synthetic fibers, which will cause you to melt it. Just a heads up!

The water isn't really a problem in what you see; that would dry quickly. Its the padding underneath that's tough to deal with.
