I am a little confused, your return is at the top and bottom of your display tank? I assume they are both vented to prevent backflow in the event of a power outage right?

Is this a reef or fish only set up?

I am a fan of flow, the more the better for me. I can always make rock formations to protect corals (such as my bubble coral) that does not need nor want strong flow.

I like the Vortech power heads, but they are pricy. To be cost effective take a look at the hydor Koralia. I am not sure of the rule of thumb any longer, maybe its to turn your tank around 10-15 times per hour – I turn mine a whole lot more than that with success. And I suspect people turn their tank with less than that with great success. So it comes down to what works for your set up. Just make sure there are no dead spots and you are good to go

thanks the return pumps and 4 stage filter system are all built in the back of the display tank so they are out of sight, would you position the powerhead about half way down the tank near the front so the flow is going across the rock, towards the filter inlets sorry to be a pain cheers

It's a give and a take, you want to get the flow everywhere so there is no dead spots - yet you don’ necessarily want to see the pumps. This is why I choose the Vortech’s – look it up and you will see the smaller design, but like I said they are pricy.

Placement is all by design, so it depends on your specific set up. Most often you see the pumps located in the top 75% of the tank either on the back or the back side of the side pane.
