I bought this like 2 years ago and then took it off after being told to because they weren't for saltwater.

I have seen a lot of people using them, but what do they run in them? Just carbon? And is it okay to leave all of the chambers empty?

Carbon and GFO are good to run in the canisters, just leave the rest empty.

I run a Fluval 205 on my 40. I don't worry about overflows, spills or leaks onto my wood floor. I can't say the same for the others.

I run the standard media: polishing pads, carbon, pre-filter plus chemi-pure. I ran the same media for 6 months until I recently replaced it.

OK hold on a second you mean you can run GFO in my rena xp4 instead of running a reactor and a another power head.

You can use a variety of media. I would use a Purigen Pouch along with Chemi-pure Elite and for good measure a Poly filter pad. Just make sure you change out the media according to directions.
I am almost shocked you didn't have the fishy smell from the exhausted carbon! Pads, carbon as rule should be changed every month depending on the bio load.

Well, maybe. The GFO is best served with a "gentle tumble" action and it will be difficult to determine where that can be accomplished in the canister.

You can as long as you leave room in the media chamber for the GFO to tumble. It is not quite as efficient as a reactor though.

Not a hint of odor. This tank was fed 1 cube of brine every other day. You raise a good point. What's more creditable, experience or rules? I care little of a cans "sell by date." Suggestions are just that, "suggestions."

Well It would be great the reactor is just another leak waiting to happen. Is GFO a rock or a powder?
