Which is better? I've heard that Fluval is a great filter and my friend has a 175gal with piranha and swears by his magnum 350. Both are about the same price so which one is better?;D

Hate to be the voice of dissent, but I have heard nothing great about Fluval except for the FX5 model. I have heard very good things about RENA filters, and of course Eheim. The RENA is cheaper than Eheim, and gets almost as good reviews. I'd personally go with one of those.

Hate to be the voice of further dissent, but why are people using canister filters?

    because they're like...filters...in a CAN!

Beer comes in cans...therefore CANister filters must be like, as good as...BEER!

What's wrong with a canister filter for a freshwater aquarium? It does an excellent job with filtration. If it produces nitrates as an end-product, so what? In a fw tank nitrates are less of a problem, and the water changes occur much more often. So that is why, for a planted fw tank, I would definitely go with a canister.
