    Hello!

This is my first post on here although I have been reading this forum for a while and have had my tank setup for almost a year now with good success.

I have recently started to get more serious about the hobby and doing alot of research and decided to get a protein skimmer which is the AquaC Remora HOB with maxi-jet 1200 and turn my HOB filter to hold two cartridges.. one with phosban and one with carbon.

    My questions are:

    1. I saw in a picture somewhere that someone had the same skimmer as mine and had purchased the foam pre-filter to go on the maxi-jet 1200 soo... I did the same. It seemed like a good idea just to keep anything big from getting sucked into the skimmer and clogging the jets. Now I am having second thoughts about it as it seems to be loading up with junk and I have to change it wth the second one (it comes on a two pack) and wash and repeat every other day. I Was wondering If anyone actually uses these and if its a good idea or not? especially since i'm not too keen on crawling under and unlugging it every feeding time.

    and 2nd:

What do you think about converting my filter as mentioned above?

    Thanks alot. ;D

Do you have a skimmer? I'm not familiar with your particular setup, but it sounds like you may be skimming a bit of the protein garbage on the surface with your filter.

yes, I have the AquaC Remora. It does seem that gunk builds up on the round foam filter I have on the maxijet 1200 and seems as though all the stuff that ends up in the collection cup is from the water flowing through that gunk.

I'm basically trying to see if someone has the same setup (minus the foam filter on the powerhead) and if they have any problem with it clogging up from feedings of frozen food such as brine, mysis etc... I had noticed the when i put the seaweed clip in the tank and the fish shredded it to pieces that it all ended up in the skimmer cup which is what got me to go buy the foam filter anyways.

    hey there
I've had the remora for about 4 months now and the only thing on the MJ1200 intake is the little cage that keeps the fish out. I haven't had any problems with clogging. at all. Its an awesome skimmer.

yea, I ended up taking the pre filter off and a week later I bought the surface pre-skimmer attachment for it and it works great.. only thing is you have to be constantly on the top offs like all the reviews I read about it had mentioned. it also got rid of almost all the micro bubbles.
