So I was online and saw a 175watt metal halide bulb.normal bulb the shape of a regular bulb not the long skinny one. Says hid. And had 14700 lumans produced. Would that bulb with some sort of light fixture be strong enough for some coral?

no, that bulb is not meant for reef use. the color spectrum on it will be all wrong. it will grow algae like crazy.

no bulbs at home depot will be good to use as primary lighting on a reef tank, the only bulbs they have there that we can use are for refugium lighting

Or some T8s 6500K work on fowlrs. My gf runs a regular shop light with two T8 6500K daylight bulbs on her 120 fowlr. Works great, doesn't grow algae. But I'm not sure how corals would react to it.

I agree with what has been said above. The halides you see at HD and Lowes have too low of a kelvin rating (on kelvin color temperature scale). The HD bulb you linked to says "bright white light" but does not state the particular kelvin rating. these HD/Lowe's bulbs are generally meant for home.shop/security lights. t best, it will be about 5000 kelvin rating...which is very yellow for our coral. Look for a 10000K or higher.

Phoenix and Ushio, are really good brands. They will each run you about $65-75, depending on the retailer you buy from.
