    Hello,

My landlord is forcing me to get rid of my 20gallon/50gallon sump system. Last night at 8PM he told me it needed to be "gone by tomorrow". I know that is unreasonable, but can anyone tell me what sort of timeframe is reasonable to be expected to get rid of it? I'm trying to sell it, I can't just throw it in a dumpster...

***PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT MY FOR SALE THREAD, I'M SELLING ALL OF MY LIVESTOCK

Wow that sucks. I think it comes down to your lease. if it says no tanks then the landlord can say today if not he should give you some time. Do you have someone who can take it while you find a new home for it? i know moving it would suck but at least you would have the time to sell it.

    Good luck!

it says no pets but we had a verbal agreement that it was okay. No there is no one who can hold it for me; I'm a college student unfortunately

    RutgersReef,

I am going to be very honest with you. Clearly your system has a major nutrient control issue. Even with your sump/fuge, the green hair algae in your DT is out of control. That means most reefers would not go near those rocks for fear of phosphate leech.

If your timeline is as short as you say it is. I think donating your system to a public aquarium or a local schools biology department may be your best bet. Again, we don't want it going in the dumpster.

I'm sure you could find an LFS to take your fish for free.

Your situation sucks, good luck buddy.

I'm aware of the algae, I installed an algae scrubber a few days ago but obviously have no time to observe the effects.

I think you missed my point.

See if there is a underfunded grad student in the biology, ecology, or marine bio department who would come get everything today.

You had a verbal agreement that you could have the fish tank? If so, I would ask him why he changed his mind all of a sudden and see if you can work something out. I can understand why a landlord would freak about having 70 gallons of water in his home but giving you one day to get rid of it seems extreme. If you did have a verbal agreement to set up a fish tank then I would tell him you will need more than one day to remove it. Since the item is not illegal you will have some time before he can legally remove the item for you (though this may make your relationship with him unpleasent in the future). But it already sounds like your relationship isn't the best at the moment.

But to help solve the problem post an add on craigslist telling your urgency and that you are accepting all offers and I bet you get a few quickly. They may not be very much but at least its something. Donating is another option. Also call an LFS and see what they can do for you. An LFS in my town will give cash (usually store credit but in your case might make an exception) for the fish and will sale the tank on consignment.

    Very good advice!

You need more time at least a couple of days more... You can always tear down everything and just get rid of livestock, rocks, etc... This way you will still have everything for when you are ready again... Maybe put stuff away in closet, garage, parents, family or friends? Maybe, see if he will allow you to set it up in the garage?

Unfortunately I live above a pizza shop, no garage :p I am currently favoring getting rid of all my livestock and keeping all the equipment. I'll give an update when I come to a conclusion...
