I am doing it in the tank..I just put a small pot on the stove--draw up a syringe, take it over to the tank, and put the tip right into the base of the algae and slowly fire the hot water. You will see the algae change color instantly. The water also cools instantly. But make sure no fish or corals are right in the vicinity.

I've done this too. It works like a champ. I use a turkey baster, and I carry the pot over to the tank with me to keep the water as hot as possible til the last instant.

    Works on turf algae too.;D

hairy algae and stinky live rock!

New to this forum - I found hairy green algae on my live rock today - on the back side. Not a lot - just enough to be noticed - but then I've only had this rock in my tank a few days - and the tank itself only a week - so just starting the cycling process. I took the rock out and placed it in a quaranteen tank until I figure out what to do - and plan to get a phosban reactor going - but noticed my "cured" - according to the store - rock - really smells bad. Rotten dead flesh smell. I thought a well cured rock would be over that. What do I do now?

Ingenious! Sometimes simple is best, but let us know in a week or so if anything spiked- or if any algae came back!
