Keep a close eye on him. I received a random hitchhiker hermit in my order if ceriths from reefcleaners. I thought he was cute so I kept him around, figured he's from reefcleaners, so how bad can he be?

Well as it turned out... pretty bad! He kept attacking snails and my other hermits. I figured he was just eager for a new shell so I'd break up the fights with a chopstick and let him be. The final straw was when he pounced on my barnacle blenny. I googled about a discovered he was a "Starry Eyed Hermit" and very much NOT reefsafe! I traded him into my LFS, but it was too late for my blenny, who disappeared... :(

You might get lucky, but I'd definitely recommend getting a positive ID on him before you get too attached. :)

I will keep all that in mind. Thanks for the help. I'm terrible at ID'ing such small animals. I'll look up your particular hermit.

    Thanks!

There are many types of dwarf(and non-dwarf) hermits. The majority of them are bad. The really only good ones are the blue-legged and the red-tipped hermits...just FYI.

Awesome! :-/ I thought hermits were pretty safe, in general.

Sorry, I hadn't mentioned that to you previously. What do the legs of your new hermit crab look like? Can we maybe get a picture of him?

No problem. I considered grabbing a pic, but at the time my camera was dead. Plus, it was sooo small, not much to see. It's all that common light red hermit color. Out of the water, it was tiny ball, like a wet spider. Being so small, I couldn't really tell any two legs (or pinchers) that looked different from the others.

I'll try for a pic as it grows. I'll monitor too, as much as possible. Thanks guys.
