I used that technique to catch my 1st achilles tang, back in early august. worked like a charm, That fish was to fast for its own good, may he rest in peace :(

Best of wishes! Some karma for luck!

Your cleaner shrimp should be fine. I don't think the wrasse will go after it until it gets pretty big. I wouldn't put them in a net. In fact butterflies should not be netted at all. They have spines along the front edge of their top fin that can easily become caught in netting. IMO one of the biggest tell tell signs of a bad LFS is one who netts any butterfly or surgeon fish. They are both easily caught in and killed by netting.

How would you go about getting it out then? a plastic container and some good luck?

I've learned that catching a fish is all about pure commitment and a lot of confidence. Get a little food on the surface they love and get them on the first try. Don't be at all timid, don't doubt yourself one bit and you will have that fish out. I'm to the point now that I can grab any fish out of my tank without removing anything, without stirring sand up and it's done on the first try.

Best way is to chase a butterfly or surgeon into a plastic container. I use a 1 gallon pitcher. Because the pitcher isn't moving just hanging there in the water they seem to see it more as refuge than danger.
