I found some nice rock that was live at one time on the beach this weekend at Myrtle Beach SC. This rock is black in color, with no signs of life or critters. Can I use this rock in a 90 gal reef I am building out of dry rock and sand, then seeding later? Do I need to detox or clean more then just washing??

You should really check the laws regarding this. I am not completely sure of SC, but pretty much everywhere it is ILLEGAL to harvest rock from the beaches.

i would power wash it, it may be illegal to take it but im assuming you already did lol. and i would try to find out what it is composed of. other people on this forum can probably help you with that, i don't know how to test it

Bleach it, you don't know what kind of pollutants are on that rock being near the coast

I have the rock in a box in my kitchen and it has no odor, it is dry, out of the water for three or so weeks now. I will get so pics up soon.
