Lighting isn't important in FOWLR. The light you get with a tank is just fine. Turn on the light when you want to watch the fish and then turn it off.

It's my understanding that you can keep a FOWLR tank under any lighting.

It's only when you try to keep photosynthetic life (many corals, clams, and algae) that you need specific lighting conditions.

I would avoid the freshwater bulbs in the 6700K range tho, I have noticed more algae growth from them. I do keep my light on a timer, and run a 12hr light cycle, but when I switched to the 50/50 bulb, th algae went away.

If the tank is near a window that gets a lot of light and it is bright in the tank during the day you don't need anything on. If it's dim in there, I'd leave the light on for 12 hours or so on a timer during the day.

I am in the process of setting up a FOWLR also and have decided to go with LED's for lighting. Don't need to maintain any corals, I just like the shimmer effect on the water and the longevity of the bulbs.

I keep mine on no more than 6-8 hours and I have 50/50 lights.
