I just bought an 18''x18''x5'' frag tank and was wondering what is really needed for a frag tank setup. I have a 250w geissman MH light setup for it too.

Does it need a sump really or could I get away without one?

I plan on putting 2-3 koralia's in there for circ.

Just wondering what else I need. No sand right? Any live rock? Skimmer?

    Thanks!

This is a suggestion and question, can't you hook up your frag tank to be slaved off your main tank so that you don't need any of that stuff???

My thought would be to have a pump in my sump pumping water to my frag tank and have it gravity drain back into the sump. THerefore, it is just an extention of my current system and I'd only need the tank and lights.

+1 to NASAGeek Having it all on one system saves a decent amount of work.

I have to disagree with you guys. While it would be easier to do this, if one tank goes the other will follow shortly. I think it would be best to have each on their own system. I believe another user did this and when one of the tanks crashed, his other did as well. He lost everything.

I would build a sump out of a 20H. However, I would just run rubble, a skimmer and a return pump in it. This way you have more water volume and some biological filtration. You don't need much rock if you don't plan on putting fish in the tank.

Agreed, The esay way is too tap off your main system but if you have any problems in it your frag tank goes south with it, Like mine did!

afraid i tooo have to agree. if youve got fish in your main tank, they too will pollute the water going into frag tank which again is more work/hassle.. keep it simple and seperate. i would also follow the advise of having more rubble than rock in there, mainly so you dont have to chip away at the rock to get the coral off!!!!
if theres no fish in there, its debateable whether you need a skimmer,as they can actually remove too much out of the water!!!

also you havn"t said what sort of corals were you thinking of fragging?? im only asking because,as we all know, some are extremely sensitive to the slightest of problems/pollution etc, thats why im going with seperate... good luck with it all though!!!

AND dont forget, youve also technically got a "doctor" tank in case one of your fish becomes ill( if you havn"t got one already that it!!)
    ;) ;)

It could be done. Raven & Geek think outta the "box".

Wouldn't 60 or 75 more lbs of LR in a 40g sump under the frag & another 40 or 50g's of water be beneficial to both tanks? I'd add a planted remote fuge to this too to stabilize water params/buffering ability even moreso.

You got hundreds of LFS's that do this everyday providing some great pieces & livestock.
