From what I have understood......you don't need any sand. All I have in mine is a few small pieces of base rock and a bunch of small rubber pieces that were broken off the rock during shipping which I'm going to be using for future frags.

Thanks brotha! I'm just trying to get some frags now to get it started.

    lighting

    Sounds, and looks good..
What you think you are going to use for lighting..??

Like to see you come up with something that doesn't cost big $$ .
I'll like to do something like that in the near future.

    Later, Larry

dude dont listen to the nitate factory comment
your frag rack wll most likely collapse you need to add more legs to it
why risk the possiblity of losing the corals you frag when your rack falls over
add more legs and use some zipties glue sucks
you will find alge will grow all over your egg crate and you will want to replace parts of your fragging system
with glue you have to replace the whole thing
    have fun

I can see where youre going to have problems with the design. As stated above from njdevilsfan... For a 10g tank, a single layer rack is all you need. Anything below the top racks will not get sufficent light, and the top racks with 3 legs will quickly fall over for being unstable. Zip ties are the way to go, you will soon learn you will need to modify things and zip ties are easily cut and redone. As for your filter, its a good filter but anything right below the return will get way to much flow. I also had heat issues when I used a 10g tank.

I know njdevilsfan personally, and we are both coral farmers as a second job/hobby. So when it comes to things like this, you need to listen to people who have done exactly what you're doing. Advice from FIRST HAND experience is priceless. I am going to be doing a build thread on a DIY frag tank on a budget soon and people will flip out how cheap it can be and how simple.

Thanks for the comments. Well, I noticed what you saying about the legs on that top little shelf. I have to arrange the corals (I haven't fragged anything yet) that I do have where they will balance out and your right, not much light comes in through the top once there is corals there. I also haven't had any heat problems but that may be because my lights are nothing special......atleast not yet.

This will make a great grow out set-up but won't do too good for someone getting into fragging. I quickly discovered that this tank will get full..........QUICKLY!

For this reason it's that I am currently workig on a new "budget friendly" project. That hopefully I should have up and running withing the next 2 weeks. Let's see how it goes.

If I was you, I would hold off until I get my thread up. You wont believe how easy and inexpensive it is to do a frag/growout tank...

I was kind of wondering what keeps the egg create from floating / shifting when you turn your pump on?

you can silicone them to the bottom prior to adding water if your absolutely sure were you want them or the weight of the frags/rock will keep them in place.

Well, I'm actually "in" the process already.

Mines are held down by the weight of the corals like RG said.
