Was just researching fragging and was curious...do you cut the rock around the polyps or what. I was watching them do it on youtube and they were not clear on it. Also they were in no way easy with them either. Just wondering.....

Im assuming were talking about zoas? or palys? But i have fragged many zoas AND palys and when i frag them i have cut off the polyp itself and i have cut the rock around a few polyps and just glued it to a frag plug or something.

But I chip off a piece of rock with polyps on it, thats probably better for the coral. If you do want to cut off like a single polyp, you need to take a hobby knife thats clean and cut the base of it(as close as possible tothe rock) then just dip it in some iodine and glue it to a rock/plug.

you cant really go wrong with fragging, you could probably take the whole pieve and rip it apart and they would all do fine, but doing it the right way just increases the chances even more of survival.

My decorator crab I used to have was quite the expert. He'd cut it off with "scissors" then chew on the end, then stick it on his back LOL. They all lived fine!

Edit: Oh, and wear safety glasses with zoas. Don't want palytoxin in the eye!

if you use a scalpel or dental pic it is pretty easy to get under the polyps and pop them off the rocks then crazy glue them to what ever you want...

Yes, even though zoas can be the most hardy coral, they can be extremly dangerous! I have heard of people having perminant lung damage due to breathing in what the zoa is releasing! They can also squirt toxins on you and can cause you to go to the E.R. May be fun, but take caution!
