I live pretty close to where this storm is supposed to hit the worst, I picked up a 5500 watt generator yesterday. Hooked it up, test ran it, ready now. I was always running around like a chicken with my head cut off when the power went out, not anymore. Who else has a generator to protect your tank, if in the area, what are you doing to prep your tank for the storm?

I really need to get one I am always freaking out that the pwoer will go out and my tank with crash. Luckily I live in an area where we dont lsoe pwoer often and when we do its usually only for a couple hours at most.

Did live through snowmeddon a few years back where we lost power for like 24 hours in the middle of the winter, house and tank both got cold (FW) but my cichlids and the 2 week old fry all survived!!

Having a Generator is great, if you have gas. Trust me when I say this, get more then you need! Once the pumps go dry, you won't be getting gas until after the storm. For Isaac we ran a 7500 watt generator for a week and burned through almost 150 gallons of gas. Prepare for at least 2 weeks of loss of power. Also some of the newer generators have problems with their tanks splitting apart by the seams, it happened to ours, by brothers, and our neighbors generator so you may want to have a stand alone tank to reroute the gas tank in case it splits

Holy cow, what were you running?? the whole house? WOW, lol. I ran my tank, a deep freezer, a fridge, and a tv and a few fans for 4 days on about 5 gallons of gas with my honda 2000w generator. Granted I only ran the fridge and freezer as needed to keep cold.

That being said, I just filled up both cars, my tractor and 15 gallons of gas, just in case.

Harbor freight has a little cheap generator for around $100 that will run a tank easily. crap, but prob worth it if you don't have one.

BTW good luck to all those on the east coast

2 freezers, 2 refrigerator/freezers, a Window unit A/C, some lights, power heads, and charging laptop/cell phones. We could put more on it but, to run our house we would need 20 kilowatts. I would stay clear of Harbor Freight genorators they are a Pain in the a$s

Cheap geni's typically are not voltage regulated... very good way to blow your valuable equipment. Fine for power tools, not fine for electronics.

It was the last one there, so I just got it. Gonna run my tank, fridge, freezer chest, and my neighbors two sump pumps. It gives me flexibility, in the winter I can run space heaters too, during summer I can run the air. It's overkill for sure but ah we'll. we have 20 gallons of back up along w the 5 it holds.

guess that will do it, expensive week;)

true, but they will run a few powerheads and a heater to keep your tank alive, and yes they are crappy, but if you don't have $500-2000 to drop on a generator, they're prob not a bad idea IMO
