Fish=lots of money. Learn the ins and outs of your generator before the storm. Ours was delivering power uneven, if you watched a light bulb it would brighten and then dim ever second or so. We needed to open a valve to allow more gas to flow to it. It's best to sort out all the issues before the storm, also have your extension cords ready, unless you are hooking it up to the house itself.

I'd highly rec having any generator if you can afford one, even the POS ones, its much better than replacing all your work in a tank. And if you do it right you should be able to run and keep your house and tanks safe with a 2000 watt generator and about 1-2 gallons of gas a day.

I have a 20 HP 10000 watt generator. Well its my dad's but its in the garage. We use it for work. This is one of the only generators I would touch for this application because its harmonic distortion is very low. Meaning it can run electronics without frying them unlike lower quality generators. The generator is complete overkill, but we need it for work when we need to fire up our heavy machinery and no electricity is available.

I get the quality generator thing, I have a $1000 honda generator that runs 2000w and self controls. I'm just advocating that if ya spend soo much money on livestock and corals, maybe even a cheapie generator to run a few powerheads and a heater is a good idea. Get one! even the crappy harbor freight is better than nothing

Totally agree with the post above. I'd rather waste couple of power heads but safe the tank anytime. Or at least untill I can afford a decent generator.

Im currently running off a 5500 no name my neighbors kid snagged. Running the heater, filter, skimmer and a single Koralia Evo 750 (which now has a slight rattle!). The gf's pc, and the cable modem. Pretty sure my router is boogered cuz if I connect through the router it acts like the cable isn't there. but straight into the modem works fine.

ninja edit: Perhaps it was the big honkin snail that was perched in between the glass top and said powerhead. -_-

You can clean up the power with an electronics surge protector.

Not really. Surge protectors are for lighting storms(joules of energy). The power-on surge from a generator is not nearly enough to set one of those off.

The real motor killer is the Square Wave output of most of the consumer grade generators.

What you need is an AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulation) with sine wave generator/square wave protection. A lot of the UPS battery back ups have this and there are also standalone units that are usually marketed towards home theater systems.
