Incase anyone is still interested. I have been running this filter for about 3 months now. I think this unit has help aide sinifigantly in the reduction of nucience algae such as diatoms and hair algae. My tank just entered it's 3rd month and I have not had 1 sign of either algae. Keep in mind that this unit has all 3 capabilities. 1. Skimmer, 2. Ability to allow placement of poly filter pads, phos pads, carbon bags etc (not all at 1 time of course). 3. Mechanical filteration through the installed sponge that is self cleaning (research the mrf's site to see how this works). Any way I run purigen in mine. Now I do have a sump with a aqua c urchin skimmer and refugium, but the combo of this unit, my sump and my closed loop seem to be working fabulous for me. Just thought I'd give all who are interested an update. I give the unit 2 thumbs up!

Actually the entire unit and pump is very easy to access. I'm not sure about the skilter filter so I can't comment on that. The unit does skim well depending on how I want it dry or wet. FWIW it is a great unit IMO. I highly recommend it if you are not able to have a sump. I have both this unit and a sump and think it's an asset to my tank. I'd send photos, but the unit is black and impossible to see against the black tank back.

I have had a Freedom Filter running in my 75 gallon tank for about 8 months or so. It was chosen for me by my LFS because it is easy - all you have to do is empty and clean the skimmer. So far it seems to work well. I was told the sponges only need to be cleaned after 18 months.
