Fresh baby brine shrimp

If you want to see your tank go wild, hatch some brine shrimp eggs and put a little in there. I hatched some for my dwarf seahorses and put a little in the reef and everything in there went crazy LOL... talk about a feeding frenzy!!

 

What method do you use to hatch your brine shrimp? I set up the "upside-down pop bottle system" and not many hatched. Was also a mess from sputtering salt-water over everything. Kas

 

I hear ya Kas, same thing here. i wonder what other ways there are?

I put the eggs in a large plastic jar(about 3quarts) and mixed with ro water and instant ocean per the directions, I then set the jar in my sump and placed an airstone in there. I put it in the sump for heat, you have to have the water around 82 degrees I think it said or they won't all hatch, then it took about 34 hours, i took out the air stone and let it settle for 15 minutes, all the shrimp go to the bottom and the hulls float to the top, put in a piece of air hose and siphon the shrimp off the bottom, I hached so many the bottom of the jar was red! good luck

 

Excellent, thanks for the info! I have been thinking of doing this for some time. Do you just add all of the hatched brine shrimp to your tank at once? Or is there a way to keep them alive for some time?

I know what you mean about the tank going crazy I use to buy live adult brine shimp for my tank back in OZ they loved it. Asked my lfs here in Canada and just got a blank look.

 

How long is the brine shrimp's life cycle? You would think that a five gallon bucket with an air stone and some 'Roti-Rich' and you could breed them long term. -Has anyone here tried growing a breed stock?

 

I also have been wanting to grow my own brine shrimp for a long time now but just never got around to do it. I find that sometimes its easier to buy it.;D

 

Not sure for how long but I have heard of people "gut loading" the shrip by feedign them smashed up fish food. THey load them up with food before feeding them to the tank so that there is more nutritional value.....
